This is a backpacking trip from Friday, April 23, to Sunday, April 25, to the Rockcastle River and The Narrows Area near London, Kentucky. Participants should have some backpacking experience. We will hike about 10 miles over the three days. Participants should be in good physical condition since the trail is rugged and difficult in areas. A stream crossing (no bridge) is necessary.
This hike is exceptionally scenic. On this hike we will see the Sheltowee Trace, Pounder Branch, Cane Creek, Van Hook Falls, Rockcastle River, The Narrows, rockhouses, waterfalls and spring wildflowers. The Rockcastle Narrows is a massive jumble of boulders that constricts the river into a noisy crashing flow of whitewater. The Rockcastle River got its name from the majestic cliffs that tower above the river and is a designated Kentucky Wild Scenic River. The river is home to a number of endangered fish, mussel and bat species. The river can be viewed in its natural state since the Cumberland Lake level is down and water is not impounding in the Rockcastle River.
Van Hook Falls
There is much to see and do on this hike. We will take ample time to observe the scenery and view nature during the trip. People in a hurry to "hike the hike" should not attend this trip. Bring your camera, be prepared for frequent stops and have an appreciation for natural beauty.
Campsites: There are no designated campsites along our route. What this trip lacks in established campsites is more than made up for with scenic beauty. Be prepared for camping in rough and uneven areas in the woods.

Andy thanks for a great weekend. Friday night the rain held off and we came across the perfect campsite. Saturday started off beautiful with a bright sun and great scenery. The snake made for some unexpected fun, Ron can comment on that. Ron was also generous enough to entertain us with tent malfunctions. Another fantastic trip with great new and old friends. Thanks Andy.......
