We will be hiking in Hocking Hills State Park on Saturday, June 19th. If you have not been to this Eastern Ohio gem, this event is a MUST for you!!! Perhaps no other area in the state of Ohio is as wild, romantic and picturesque as Hocking Hills State Park. In the parks you will discover amazingly massive sandstone outcroppings, deep cool gorges, towering hemlocks and glistening waterfalls that characterize the Hocking region. Abundant wildlife including white-tailed deer, barred owls, ruffed grouse and an occasional bobcat make the wooded ravines and ridge tops their home.
We will have a hiker's potluck after the hike. Please bring some finger food or drinks to share with the group. I'd be happy to keep a list, so we can coordinate items, if you'd like. We'll leave the food in each of our cars and we'll picnic at tables near the parking area after the hike.
We will hike the most popular of all the Hocking areas, the Old Man's Cave, located on S.R. 664. Here at Upper Falls, the Grandma Gatewood Trail begins its six-mile course connecting three of the park's areas: Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave and back. This same trail has been designated as part of Ohio's Buckeye Trail as well as part of two national trails, the North Country Scenic Trail and America's Discovery Trail.
We will meet at the Old Mans Cave Visitors Center for a gorgeous hike that spans 1/2 the trail or roughly 3 miles of the Grandma Gatewood Trail. This hike does include several steep hills and numerous steps along rocky outcrops with picturesque views perfect for photography buffs. This is however, a strenuous hike.
We will be traversing the section that runs from Old Mans Cave to Cedar Falls, then carpooling to Ash Cave and back to Old Man's Cave . For those that would like to hike the entire 6 miles, please feel free to pack your lunch and hike the full Grandma Gatewood Trail section (3-4 hours) from Old Man's Cave- Cedar Falls- Ash Cave. When you are done, we will gladly help shuttle folks back to the parking lot at Old Man's Cave.
A VERY LIMITED number of primitive campsites are available for this weekend as of Noon today, with a minimum 2 night stay for $56.25. Richard and I will be staying Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations may be completed by calling [masked] or online at : http://www.ohio.reser...
If interested in carpooling, please post. We have room for one leaving on Friday, June 18th by 2 pm.
Can't wait to see you there!

Due to our small group size, we are apt to change our itinerary based on the desires of those in attendance.
Weather looks good --only 30% chance of rain on Saturday with lows overnight in the upper 60s.
For the rest of the day, consider canoeing. Water levels should be excellent and there are hourly departures or a TORCHLIGHT PADDLE at the following link: http://www.hockinghillscanoeing.com/departure_schedule_Ju...
We were down this past Sunday--a fabulous day for hiking in the Hocking Hills!
Thanks for your RSVP and note Daryl. I've updated this meetup for clarification. Due to the strenuous nature of this hike, some of us will only complete the first 3 mile stretch to Cedar Falls, then take the car tour route, but we'll gladly help shuttle others from Ash Cave, if arrangements are made with us in advance.
