That specific idea for a Meetup could not be found, or no longer exists.
my bucket list has the Grand Canyon on it and since I am still in my 30's and have little kids who are net yet in sports, I figured now is the time to do it.
Anyway, I want to get a group together that would possibly meet on a monthly basis and start to plan something for next year.
If you would be interested, financially able, physically able and fun to be around, Please show that you are interested and I will follow with more details. I am thinking that our first "meeting" would be in October-ish.
I am also open to other locations in the USA. I am not fully committed to the GC (yet). Yosemite, Colorado, etc.
There is a trail in the Smokies that is #35 in the nation on Trails.com and I want to do it. here is their description of the Hike:
his loop starts at the highest trailhead in the park, taking the Appalachian Trail past myriad views of the park and beyond. It then drops into Tennessee, where you leave the high country spruce-fir forest for a streamside campsite in rich woodland that has every-where-you-look beauty. Remain in the valley of the Little River for a lovely watershed walk, to spend your second night beneath Clingmans Dome at Three Forks. Get a good night?s sleep here, as your final day makes a long and strenuous climb back to the high country via the Sugarland Mountain Trail, with more good views along the way. Finally, intersect the Appalachian Trail to undulate over Mount Collins and Clingmans Dome. Make a final stop at the observation tower atop the dome before completing your loop.
I was thinking about doing September 24, 25 and 25
Meet at Overnight Parking for Twin Valley Backpacking Trail at 9688 Eby Road, Germantown, Ohio. Hike the orange trail which varies in terrain. Will visit Hopewell Earthworks - Carlisle Fort. Carlisle Fort features remnants of earthen walls built around 2000 years ago by the Hopewell culture. It is currently listed in the National Register of Hstoric Places. Would like to start early in the morning and hike slow. Pack lunch and shoes suitable for crossing Twin Creek. As a bonus, we will visit an abandoned 1920's era crane and remains of suspension bridge, but to do so, we will cross the creek (knee deep). If this sounds like fun... post up!
Hike from the Germantown Metropark Conservancy Road trail head to Highway 725 and return. The first .75 miles is easy and flat. We then enter the forest and the trail for the next 1.5 miles changes to single-file with numerous moderate hills and switchbacks. The trail then descends into a wild-flower-filled field to the highway. We will stop at the Cedar Ridge campsite for our break. Leashed dogs welcome.
